How long does it take to go from “dating” to “in a relationship”?

Thursday, October 6th, 2011

Question by Rose: How long does it take to go from “dating” to “in a relationship”?
Like say a guy asks you out on a date…after how long or after how many dates are you guys considered “a couple”/in a relationship/bf gf as opposed to simply hanging out with each other? Thoughts?
Also, does a guy have to officially ask you to be his gf, or is it just assumed after a while?

I think ‘dating’ is more about going out with people and getting to know them, and seeing if you like them. If you do, you carry on seeing this person and are ‘in a relationship’ with them.

How do you go from “dating” to “going out”/”in a relationship”?

Question by dvddude: How do you go from “dating” to “going out”/”in a relationship”?
I’ve been looking at the difference between the two but nobody’s really mentioned how to get from one to the other. I mean there’s plenty of possible ways such as “asking her out” or sharing that first kiss, but what officially sets it up?

When you’re dating, you’re more open. It’s possible to have a date with one person one week, and another the next, though I wouldn’t recommend it. “Going out” implies that you’re consistently dating one person, and are at the point where it would be considered cheating if you went with someone else.

Really, though, there isn’t much of a technical difference.

If marriage “strengthens” a relationship, then why do people get divorced? Is it the womans fault?

No.

Sometimes love is too blinding. it fades away reality. and when reality kicks in, the fog is faiding away. And then… sometimes we see what really is going on. And then we see some don’t fit tougether as in “marriage”

Q&A: What is the different between “dating” and “in a relationship”?

Question by thelazynarakid: What is the different between “dating” and “in a relationship”?
I have been hanging out with this girl a lot lately (winter formal, her house, the mall) and her friend told me she (the girl I’ve been hanging out with) wanted us to be “dating” but not official boyfriend/girlfriend. What does this mean? What do two people do that are dating?

Oh and we’re both fifteen.

Thank you!

Hey mate, how’s it going? I find it interesting that as fifteen year olds you are “dating” like that. Let me explain myself. The difference between dating and being in a relationship is not a huge contrast. When you’re dating, the couple just goes out on dates together (like how you two have been doing; formals, hanging out, going to places). Going out like that is considered a date. Being in a relationship has to do with the connection you have with the significant other. You go out on dates also, but maybe not as frequently. Instead, you might just hang out at each other’s houses a lot more, consider each other boyfriend and girlfriend, and just want to be in each other’s company. You’ll get more intimate and just be on that “couples” level. These are two rather brief descriptions, but hope you get the idea.

I find this interesting because at least for older people, dating has sexual intentions at times. You go out on dates, but never get serious enough for a relationship, but may be up for sex even though not dating. I’m not saying that the girl at age 15 has sexual intentions like that in mind, but to me, it seems like she’s just out for fun. She likes going out on dates with you, hanging out with you and stuff, but at the moment doesn’t want to be in a serious, committed relationship.

Hope this helped out, feel free to message me for anything else. Take care and best of luck. :)

Question by Kai W: What’s the difference between “dating” and “in a relationship”?
I don’t do the whole dating thing or whatever too much, but a lot of people agree that there is a big difference between “dating” someone and “being in a relationship” with someone. Could someone tell me that that difference is?

Dating is when your just getting to know the person, and not officially going out with them.. In a relationship is when you call them your boyfriend/girlfriend and its serious.
