Question by thelazynarakid: What is the different between “dating” and “in a relationship”?
I have been hanging out with this girl a lot lately (winter formal, her house, the mall) and her friend told me she (the girl I’ve been hanging out with) wanted us to be “dating” but not official boyfriend/girlfriend. What does this mean? What do two people do that are dating?
Oh and we’re both fifteen.
Thank you!

Hey mate, how’s it going? I find it interesting that as fifteen year olds you are “dating” like that. Let me explain myself. The difference between dating and being in a relationship is not a huge contrast. When you’re dating, the couple just goes out on dates together (like how you two have been doing; formals, hanging out, going to places). Going out like that is considered a date. Being in a relationship has to do with the connection you have with the significant other. You go out on dates also, but maybe not as frequently. Instead, you might just hang out at each other’s houses a lot more, consider each other boyfriend and girlfriend, and just want to be in each other’s company. You’ll get more intimate and just be on that “couples” level. These are two rather brief descriptions, but hope you get the idea.
I find this interesting because at least for older people, dating has sexual intentions at times. You go out on dates, but never get serious enough for a relationship, but may be up for sex even though not dating. I’m not saying that the girl at age 15 has sexual intentions like that in mind, but to me, it seems like she’s just out for fun. She likes going out on dates with you, hanging out with you and stuff, but at the moment doesn’t want to be in a serious, committed relationship.
Hope this helped out, feel free to message me for anything else. Take care and best of luck.
